Community Foundation Supports Downtown Public Art.
Community Foundation of Henderson County Steps Up Support for Downtown Public Art!

The Community Foundation of Henderson County announced at the March 7th meeting of City Council that they have opened and dedicated a fund to the 6th & Main Public Art and Fountain project. The work by Berry Bate of Asheville, NC will be installed as a component of the Main Street Phase III Rehabilitation Project. The $20,000 donation not only represents our community’s commitment to the arts but helps assure that the piece will be finished to the highest quality.

Randy Romeo, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Community Foundation noted, “It was not surprising to us that Historic Downtown Hendersonville has been identified as one of six finalists for “Great Main Street” in North Carolina” and that the Foundation believed, “The fountain and associated enhancements will offer an open environment for gathering, in addition to public access to the arts and the creation of a welcoming community symbol.” Main Street Director Lew Holloway added, “Downtown, the City and the Main Street Advisory Committee are thrilled to see this contribution to Phase III and specifically the Fountain project. It reflects our interest in promoting downtown Hendersonville as a significant component of the unique sense of place enjoyed by our community.”

Downtown WiFi Gets Upgrade!
WiFi in Downtown to be upgraded by May 2013!

City Council voted to prioritize needed upgrades to the Downtown WiFi system at the March 7th meeting, noting that its value to the district as the new season kicks off is important. Outlining the technology upgrades needed to enhance the existing system Allen Edge, the City’s IT Director, indicated with an official go ahead the project could be completed by the requested May 1st date.

The enhancements will expand the existing WiFi to deliver consistent and complete coverage from Allen to 7th Ave and to push the signal as far down each of the Avenues as possible. The intent of the system is to provide WiFi access to visitors in downtown while they enjoy the district.

Downtown District Map!
Downtown Business District Map being finalized!

The Main Street Advisory Committee and Main Street Director have been diligently working on a new District Business Map for Historic Downtown Hendersonville. The map, which will fold to 4 by 10-11, is designed to fit in a rack card slot, but to offer a great deal more information than a rack card could. The business listing is arranged, overall, by 8 categories; 1) Restaurant, 2) Specialty Food, 3) Specialty Realty, 4) Services, 5)Jewelry/Galleries, 6) Apparel,7) Antiques/Home Goods & 8) Educational/Institutional. Within these eight categories businesses will then be listed by their physical location within the district. There will be additional information about the district overall, city parking lots, etc.

We are excited to be working with the TDA to print and distribute this piece and plan to push our distribution around downtown and the county. Members of the Advisory Committee and the sub-committee’s will be sharing the business listing with you in the near future to be sure we have your information on the brochure correct, please take a moment, when they stop in, to review your listing for accuracy. We are printing a significant number to start so it is not clear when the first opportunity for changes and a reprint will occur.

Dogwood Lot Improvements!
Dogwood Parking Lot Gets More Public Spaces!

In October of 2011 the Main Street Advisory Committee reviewed some potential changes to parking layouts in a number of downtown parking lots, including the Dogwood lot on 4th Ave. & Church St. The Advisory Committee noted the general need for additional public parking and a specific need for a simplified layout in the Dogwood lot that would ease visitor navigation. They recommended a design which eliminated the free parking within the lot in concert with a reduction in the total number of leased spaces, thereby boosting the total number of publicly available spaces by 18. City Council approved these layout changes in the Dogwood lot at their November 2011 session and in January of 2012 agreed to include funding for the project within the current Public Works budget.

Public Works Traffic Department is now prepared to implement the new layout and will begin work on the project on March 25, 2013. The new layout will include 5 handicap spaces, 88 metered spaces, 58 Leased spaces and 2 electric vehicle charging stations for a total of 153 spaces. If you lease in this lot you will continue to have access to your space, if are interested in leasing a space in a downtown lot please contact Anita Lockhart with the City of Hendersonville Police Dept. at 697.3050.

We are always working to enhance the experience of downtown visitors and welcome your feedback on the new layout. The Advisory Committee believes that the increase in the total number of publicly available spaces will enhance the overall parking experience for downtown visitors. With the Dogwood Parking lot an easy five minute stroll from nearly all of downtown; it is a great place to start your visit to Historic Downtown Hendersonville!

BBQ Seeks Downtown Support
Henderson County Boyd BBQ Expo Seeks Our Help!

The Boyd BBQ Expo is scheduled for April 20th, 2013 at the Hendersonville High School Stadium. The event, which benefits the Henderson County Education Foundation, now in its fourth year, is looking for partners to spread the word about the event and help raise funds. They are asking interested downtown retailers and restaurants to consider posting their support and selling dollar “Piggies.” This approach is similar to what you may have seen at your local grocery store, where interested participants “purchase” a Piggie for a dollar, write their name on it and the store posts the pieces in a prominent location in the store.

We have the material for this opportunity and will gladly distribute it to businesses who are interested in helping the Boyd BBQ Expo support our wonderful local school system.
